Context

A growing family expands their 2 bedroom home to accommodate their two daughters and remain in their neighborhood.

Response

We created a dramatic cantilevered addition that directs views from the house into the gardens of the backyard, instead of up at their neighbor's windows. Window shapes and arrangement, siding profiles and roof trim create a clear differentiation between old and new, while consistent paint color and a new metal roof knits the project together as one.

Renovation

Renovation of a 1850's greek revival Cape.

In Town

Located on Portland's Munjoy Hill, a tightly knit historic neighborhood within walking distance to schools, shopping and transportation.

Renewable Materials

Maine sourced exterior cladding and framing lumber.

Sustainable Landscape

The addition retains the existing footprint of the building in a tight urban lot with no increase in lot coverage.

Energy Efficient

Exterior foam board combined with 5 1/2" of cellulose insulation allow a dramatic increase in comfort along with affordable long-term energy bills. A direct vent natural gas boiler allows removal of the space hogging and cold draft inducing brick chimney from the interior.

Renewable Power

Flat plate solar thermal panels create 100% of the hot water needed by a family of four.
