Transform a mountaintop passive solar house in northern Vermont to suit a young family's needs.
The original house was built by an 85 year old builder, and needed a new mudroom, kitchen, home office, carport and covered entry to survive the severe winter. We designed an expansive red cedar deck that captures every bit of the afternoon sun and the dramatic views of the White Mountains. The office spreads its wings above a rustic hand-crafted stone base and gives a protected aerie to manage the owner's business.
The new kitchen retains the massive butcher block island, wrapping it with new Vermont soapstone counters, a commercial range, and one-of-a-kind tractor seat barstools.
Addition to a 1985 passive solar custom home.
Locally salvaged fieldstone, reclaimed barn board siding, vintage bath fixtures and decorative architectural elements.
Closed cell spray foam insulation throughout all new construction.
