Context

An existing 2-bedroom home blessed with a wonderful lakeside location, but with the modest construction and flimsy insulation typical of its era.

Our clients, a young couple with a growing family, had longstanding connections to the property. Although their program required much larger structure than the original house, they were also committed to preserving the quiet low-key character of the neighborhood.

Response

The original house was retired and replaced with a new structure that takes advantage of the "grandfathered" location, but also sits back further from the shore to conform more to the surrounding buildings.

The new +/- 6,600 sf house is designed for 4-season vacation use by a large extended family with four bedrooms plus a large bunk-room. The sweeping living/dining/kitchen area opens on to an elevated deck and screen porch through spectacular sliding doors. Generous play areas open on to the lakeside lawn and private beach.

Clever use of sloping grades conceals the bulk of the new house below grade to minimize the visual impact of the new structure. Round field stones from the original structure were carefully salvaged and reused.
