Context

Set on a small lot near the ocean in Rye, NH, the owners of this property wanted a net-zero home with a traditional, coastal appeal. Views over the adjacent harbor and nearby wetlands were a driving force in the design of this home, as was their desire for modestly-sized, comfortable and efficient home.

Response

We oriented the house so that a covered front porch welcomes visitors to the front door, and placed the garage at the rear of the house so as not to dominate the entry experience. Beautiful ocean vistas towards the northeast allowed for the placement of photovoltaic panels on the south-facing roofs without compromising the views. The design places the bedrooms upstairs for privacy and views, with the main living spaces and home office on the main level. The house is clad in grey cedar shingles, a shingle roof with gable dormers, and a shed roof over the front porch.

Renewable Power

The PV array on the roof provides as much energy as the home uses, thereby achieving net-zero energy status
